Prior to formally designating Jordan Ayew as captain for the forthcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar later this month, Ghana decided to rotate captains during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. His remarks come after Ghana made this decision.
Appiah stressed the importance of team cohesion in an interview with Joy Sports.
"My only piece of advise is to hope that what I've heard about their attempts to address the captaincy issue is accurate. Given the caliber of our players, we should make sure the squad is cohesive if they can resolve the issue. You can't accomplish anything without unity," he said.
Asamoah Gyan temporarily retired from international football after Appiah, who had previously dealt with a similar problem, dismissed Gyan as captain prior to the 2019 AFCON. But once then-President Nana Akufo-Addo intervened, he changed his mind.
