After fainting during a light heavyweight bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Olanrewaju, 40, died on March 29.
After paramedics tried to resuscitate him right away, Olanrewaju was unable to respond and was taken to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was declared dead around half an hour later.
Even though Olanrewaju seemed to be in command of the bout, he lost it in the third round without taking a blow. His collapse's cause is still being looked into.
Olanrewaju competed in 24 professional fights during his career, recording 13 victories, 8 defeats, and 3 ties.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams has formed a committee to look into the circumstances of Olanrewaju's death in detail in response to this unfortunate event.
Major (Rtd) Amarkai Aamartefio will chair the committee, which also includes Peter Zwennes, Ekow Asmah, Samuel Bartels, Eddie Pappoe, Dr. Martin Engmann, and Mrs. Juliana Addo-Yobo as secretary.
Among the committee's main goals are:
to ascertain what caused Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju (dead) to pass away on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
